How to Stay Safe on LinkedIn: Scams, Privacy & Account Security

LinkedIn is generally one of the safest and most moderated professional social networks in the world. However, because it hosts senior executives, hiring managers, and high-earning professionals, it is a prime target for impersonation, phishing messages, and fraudulent job offers. Staying safe requires understanding the platform's security settings and recognizing deceptive outreach patterns.

Watch out for these common scams: (1) Fake Recruiter Job Scams: Offering high-paying remote roles with no interview, asking for personal banking details or upfront equipment fees. (2) Phishing Links: InMails claiming your account has a security issue with links to fake login pages. (3) Crypto & Investment Pitches: Random connection requests asking to move to WhatsApp or Telegram.

Never publish your personal home address, private phone number, or personal email address directly in your public About section or banner. Use LinkedIn's private contact information fields where visibility can be restricted to 1st-degree connections only.

Always enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) using an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or 1Password) under Settings > Sign in & security. This prevents unauthorized account takeovers even if your password is compromised.

If you encounter a suspicious or abusive profile, click the "More" or "..." button on their profile and select Report / Block. Blocking immediately severs connection, removes mutual endorsements, and prevents them from viewing your profile or messaging you.
